A resort hotel was rebuilt at the shore of a lake in Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture. In order to instill a sense of harmony between
the building and natural environment, the structure was strategically
situated to take advantage of a soft line formed by the lake and natural
forest. Rather than making a striking contrast with nature, the architecture
reflects the traditional Japanese subtlety which delicately blends in
with the environment. The theme of the hotel, "watching changes in
nature," is realized by surrounding the cultural space of the hotel
with the natural environment. To impart the subdued warmth of a mountain
resort with all the trappings of a modern hotel, the atrium is surrounded
by elements, finishes and furnishings to create an extraordinarily sensuous
space. Despite the framed structure and separation from the nature outside,
the plaster walls, clay boards, wood, bricks and wrought iron of the masterfully
crafted interior provide a warm and cozy setting where people can truly
relax as they enjoy the beauty of nature.
