Kyorin University School of Medicine Hospital Outpatient Building

Fan-shaped glass facade representing an "open hospital"

The reconstruction plan for Kyorin University School of Medicine Hospital was started due to problems facing the existing building, such as aging, lack of area, and ability to withstand earthquakes, and the new outpatient building has recently been completed. Redevelopment was carried out as leading-edge medical care and as a disaster prevention base, and with the theme "people and community-friendly hospital," efforts are being made to create a comfortable medical environment open to the whole world.
The building is located in the northeastern part of the medical school campus on which the shadows of Musashino linger, and in an effort to leave the warm and happy feeling of nature in the environment surrounding the advancing development of residential areas, an external space with abundant greenery was created along the roadside. The existing building, the new outpatient building and the new wards (to start construction this spring, and scheduled for completion in Autumn 2000) have been placed in a corridor shape with the courtyard planned as a place for relaxation. Open spaces have been left along the road on the northern side as an approach space rich in greenery, while the fan-shaped form along the road on the eastern side symbolizes the "open hospital," in an effort to promote harmony with the surrounding area.

The new outpatient building has been linked with other buildings at the 1st floor basement level, forming a go-around-style traffic line. The waiting halls on each floor are located in the fan-shaped areas, and are comfortable spaces bathed in natural light.

We have also adopted an artificial ground base isolation system that base-isolates multiple buildings at the same time. The medical disaster prevention function has been heightened by integrating the new outpatient building and the new wards (2nd phase construction work) that have different numbers of floors with an artificial ground (1st floor basement) incorporating a base isolation system.
