Toyota Industries Corporation Information Technology Laboratory

This is an IT research institute which was constructed in a corner of the ruins of Kariya Castle, in the southwestern part of Kariya City, where a large number of automotive-related plants are clustered. Its aim is to computerize research and development and promote the advanced use of IT in products.
The plan was based on the theme of rebuilding the streetscape, while maintaining the surrounding environment, abundant in nature and featuring historical buildings. The building was named "e-Lab," and as a modern-day castle building that fulfills the role of distributing and accumulating information, a simple design was adopted featuring robust exposed-concrete walls of Japanese cedar narrow boards and glass curtain walls representing the interactive part of information. A high level of reliability was assured by incorporating base-isolation systems and by using redundant power supply facilities.

Kurihara Central Hospital

A public general hospital constructed by Kurihara Regional Medical Association, which comprises 10 villages and towns in northern Miyagi Prefecture. Based on the concept of a "hospital located within a park," the creation of a park environment was fostered by greening the site and establishing piazzas, and the buildings are brought together centering on a bright hospital mall with a two-layer atrium established on the line of movement connecting the eastern and western piazzas. Inside, natural light is incorporated to create a bright, clean and open space, and the interior with its wood-tone finish provides a calm, warm atmosphere. In addition, another concept in the form of a building with peace of mind entails the employment of the region's first base-isolated structure, and helping the building fulfill its role as a base facility in times of emergency.

Kansai University Faculty of Sociology Building

This project involved an extension to the Faculty of Sociology Building located on an elevated part of the well-greened Senriyama Campus. With the objective of accommodating IT and globalization, the building was planned as a building incorporating old and new, and construction was carried out in conjunction with refurbishment of the existing building. Two wings were added to the L-shaped existing building to form a square plan. In addition to enabling new lines of circulating movement, courtyards and other amenity areas were established for students in various parts of the building. The glass facade on the top of the Sociology Building, which is the highest structure on the campus, was designed to realize the image of an open university, and to hopefully become a landmark for the area. On the building's exterior, the use of French wall tiles was continued, which take on an impressive appearance with time, and an attractive landscape was created as a group of buildings.

Yayoigaoka Kage Hospital

This is a hospital which opened in a new town located in northeastern Saga Prefecture, which also fulfills a base function in times of emergency. With the intent that this building establishes itself as a symbol of the health and peace of mind of local residents, the exterior combines sculptural expression with the gentle tones based on the color of soil and the beautiful sunsets that leave an impression of Yayoigaoka.
The large inner courtyard and surrounding lobby and corridors draw in abundant light and breezes into the building, and while making a great contribution to saving energy and increasing comfort within the building, give users the impression that it is a hospital which is easy to find your way around in. The open timber-decked terrace constructed within the inner courtyard will hopefully motivate and promote the rapid recovery of patients.

Jichi Medical School Hospital New Annex

Jichi Medical School Hospital has university and hospital facilities located within a vast site, and it is an advanced treatment hospital that covers a broad medical care area. The new annex was constructed as a part of a large-scale refurbishment plan, to respond to increasingly sophisticated and diversifying needs for medical care, and to enhance facilities. The building was designed on the basis of securing operating rooms and ward numbers, while enhancing patient amenity, and the balconies facing onto each ward and mullions with built-in down-pipes serve to provide a sense of openness in the wards, secure evacuation routes, and achieve a sharp external appearance. In constructing the building, top priority was assigned to ensuring the safety of outpatients and visitors and maintaining the function of adjoining university and hospital. Kizu Kabutodai

Located on the border of Kyoto Prefecture and Nara Prefecture, this is a collective housing project that forms the core of an urban area that will be constructed over a long period of time. As a collective housing project located in an environment blessed with abundant greenery, we have attempted to assign the charm of "permanent residence." By virtue of deep balconies, high window sashes, and suspended hallways that increase the sense of openness and outlook from north-facing living rooms, residents and visitors are able to enjoy the abundant outside spaces, fostering an attachment to the area. Additionally, 100-year concrete and a base-isolated structure have been employed to ensure a long life for the building, and a plan has been adopted which enabled refurbishment in response to the life cycle by centralizing plumbing and so forth. A mustard color is used as an accent in the exterior wall tiles that are in harmony with the flow of existing buildings, creating a breath of fresh air for this urban area.
