This clinic, which has in-patient beds, was completed
in Aguicho on the Chita Peninsula in southern Aichi Prefecture. The
client, Koyukai, has its base in Handa City to the south, and is deeply
involved in nursing and care in the community, with various welfare
facilities for the elderly centered on an orthopedic hospital, such
as nursing and health-care facilities, day care, day service, and group
home facilities.
With the relocation of the hospital due to dilapidation, the client
was hoping for a clinic that would be kind on the patients, easy to
get around, and without a "hospital smell." This was realized with an
atrium built in the main entrance. Centered on this atrium, the design
connects the consultation rooms, the rehabilitation rooms and the second
floor ward rooms. The waiting area is in the center of the atrium, surrounded
by plants. Sunlight pours in from the skylight in the ceiling, and the
patients and staff meet up together in the atrium area.
The simple white exterior looks wonderful against the countryside background.
The vertical louvers of the extruded cement boards on the outside of
the balconies which were designed to do something about the western
sun, create expressions with sharp changes while the shadows move as
time passes.
The layout was designed to accommodate extensions to the facilities
on adjoining property which are planned for the future.
