| Tanabe Seiyaku Co., Ltd., which has its Head Office in
Osaka, has constructed a new welfare facility at its Onoda Factory in
Yamaguchi Prefecture, which is the core of the company's pharmaceutical
manufacturing division. The new facility has a cafeteria and various meeting
rooms. The northern side of the factory which was selected as the site for the new building is in an area rich with greenery, facing the Ariho River, with views of houses, fields and the Chugoku Mountains in the distance. To make the most of the environment, and the row of Cherry Blossom trees along the river, it was decided to replant as many of the trees as possible, reorganizing the green belt along the river, and position the welfare facility in such a way that it fuses "nature" and "artificiality." The building has been zoned so that the main wall that runs through the building east to west acts as a border, with the main cafeteria, meeting and lounge rooms in the northern side, and with big glass windows so the wonderful view of nature and views outside can be fully enjoyed The southern side, which faces the production facilities, has an open feeling welcoming visitors with a large open entrance and large stairway, and also contains the kitchen and equipment spaces in a metal enclosure. The simple exterior appearance that captures the features of the space as they are, with a feeling of translucency, expresses the clean image of a pharmaceutical company. |

| The interior space realizes a clear, plane surface with
a high degree of flexibility to enable changes in the corporate environment
in the future. The atrium entrance hall connects the various main areas,
and gives the "atmosphere" of connectivity and spaciousness. Also, works
of art entitled "Harmony" (artist: Haru Ishii) are displayed on the walls
of the hall, symbolizing the concept of the building of the connection
between nature and mankind, and giving a soft feeling to the interior. There is a reduction on the heat load, by locating the main rooms on the northern side, making as much use as possible of the rich natural surroundings with light and fresh air being drawn in through openings in suitable positions, thereby taking the environment into positive consideration based on the corporate policy of the owner. The use of a simple spatial structure and plain materials expresses a concord between nature and the production facilities, with the pursuit of a building which will give birth to a new dynamism for the workers. |
