Kaigandori Elegano Kobe

Elegano Kobe is a lifelong, pay retirement home with nursing care, which has been constructed on a waterfront site in Kobe. As a facility for senior citizens in a city environment, the aim was for a life base where the residents could enjoy the town with intellectual stimulation. Taking the views and the sunlight into consideration, the plan called for a high-rise building (using base isolation on the intermediate floors), with a clear separation of functional zones, and the housing for healthy residents in the top floors and the housing for those requiring nursing care in the lower floors. The other facilities that were built at the same time, such as cafes, give vibrancy to the town, and foster the development of a community with exchange between the generations.

Okayama Prefectural ,Welfare, Volunteerism NPO Hall

The "Kirameki Plaza" has been constructed to house various Okayama Prefecture welfare-related bodies such as consultative and other related organizations, as well as facilities to support volunteer and NPO activities. A general base facility for promoting cooperation between the residents and the local government in community welfare has been realized through this PFI project. With the objective of controlling waste products and the reduction of the work cost, reuse has been made of the National Okayama Hospital, which was built over 40 years ago, through the selection of large-scale conversion with earthquake strengthening and renewal throughout. The existing building has been strengthened from the outside, and a proposal was made for a "double-frame structural method" that would enable the unified improvement of the design, functions, and earthquake-resistance performance. This has realized various added values, such as free space inside the building without earthquake resisting walls, rational facilities and equipment that can be easily maintained, the installation of a slope for safer evacuation, and a renewed exterior image for the hospital.

NOK CORPORATION SHONAN R&D CENTER

This project involved the demolishment of a dilapidated factory and the construction on part of the site, of a development center, bringing together research facilities that were scattered throughout the country. Because the size of the site was restricted, there was a call for a stacked-type multipurpose research facility with flexibility for the frequent movement of some of the equipment and for renewal. There fore, so simple seven-meter high floors without columns were constructed, and with the least amount of corridors as possible, efficiently laid out to realize easy-to-use research space. The cafeteria and conference rooms have also been designed as open spaces, facing windows and the central courtyard, and the exterior appearance reduces any oppressive feeling on the surrounding area and has been given a clean expression.

ODATE CITY JUKAI GYMNASIUM

This large-scale gymnasium has been constructed next to the Odate Jukai Dome in preparation for the 2007 Akita Wakasugi National Sports Meeting. The large roof with hybrid string beams made of laminated lumber and steel gives a "flowing" impression, symbolizing the magnificent surrounding nature and the dynamism of sports. The curtain wall on the western side displays a feeling of spatial continuation with the Jukai Dome. The gymnasium has been designed so that soft light pours in through the accentuated laminated Akita cedar louvers into the gallery and entrance hall. ATLAS EDOGAWA APARTMENT

This project entailed the rebuilding of the old Dojunkai Edogawa Apartment Building. The high-density building layout has three rows in the east to west direction, and two rows in the north to south direction. With a staggered pattern of the dwelling unit layout, it gives a freer line of sight, and the construction of a center court and pilotis maintain good airflow and sunshine. The exterior uses specially ordered, cable-stitch, and 227 by 90 millimeter stoneware tiles with a finish that reminds one of the old building. The steel handrails and the stained glass from the old building are being reused in the common area atelier for preservation, and authentic reproduction has been made of the hand-grinded finish of the floors and staircases.
