ISLAND CITY CENTRAL PARK GRINGRIN

Sophisticated buildings flow gracefully along the 15ha park.

This Island City, which "floats" in Hakata Bay in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka, is an artificial island of around 400 hectares in size, surrounded by the abundant nature of the sea, and with tidelands. On the island "GRINGRIN" is the core facility of "Grippi's Forest," a 15-hectare comprehensive park planned by Fukuoka City. The facility was used as the theme hall for the "Island Flower Dontaku" National Urban Greenery Fukuoka Fair, held from September to November 2005, and since April 2006, it is being used as a facility for learning about greening through experiences.
The objective of this plan was to give a fluid and gentle change to the topography of the entire park, and to provide various activities to the visitors. Therefore, the park facility has not itself been made independent, but has been as one with the nature and landscape with the gentle topography, becoming "hill-like architecture" with a continuation between indoor and outdoor space. The building frames, reaching around 190 meters in length, use a new free-form surface RC shell structure, with one continuing surface twisting twice to form three indoor spaces.
Land and gently curved architecture become one.
Roofs shelter walking paths and light windows.
This wall will soon be covered by greenery.

The indoor space, with a display greenhouse centering on subtropical plants and learning facilities, has a large skylight opening in the shell roof surface (with a maximum span of 25 meters) and curtain walls along the sides, to allow plenty of sunshine to shine through for nurturing the plants. The entire rooftop has greenery, and there is a footpath around the roof with views over the entire park, making it look as if the ground and the building rooftop are continuous parts of the topography.
To build this complicated building structure, real-size mock-ups were made of the building frames beforehand, in order to give consideration to various issues such as confirmation and analysis of the construction and quality. For the mold work, a construction method for the irregular curves was devised, and in the design, with hardly any straight lines in either the parallel or upward directions, drawings with coordinate management were used, and on-site marking was undertaken. Three-dimensional CAD was used for the drawing of the complicated shapes and for confirming the shapes and measurements of the parts to be built. This construction was completed through the fusion of the technological strength of Takenaka, and the techniques, wisdom and experience of each of the people responsible.
