The exterior appearance, on Shijo-dori Avenue in Kyoto

This construction work was for the Kyoto flagship store and offices of one of the oldest Japanese tea production and sales companies. Located on the southwestern corner of Shijo-dori and Tominokoji-dori avenues in central Kyoto, the exterior appearance has a black granite (Shanxi black water jet) abstract three-dimensional grating design, with double glass and wooden crisscross latticework installed on the inner side. Wooden crisscross lattices form the shitomidos (Japanese-style hinged-top windows which could swing up, designed for viewing outside), enabling easy viewing of the city scenes and festivals of Kyoto from inside.

The interior floor design, by Professor Hiromasa Amasaki of Kyoto University of Art and Design, is composed mainly of stones, making an interior garden resembling the outside. LEDs have been installed between the exterior wall stone grating and the inside wooden latticework, and when lit up at night, the wooden lattice appears to float over the stone grating. Pure Japanese designs and elements such as "stones, plaster, brownish yellow clay finishing, and latticework," and modern designs and elements such as "glass, aluminum, steel, observation elevators, and LEDs" are present at the same time. The aim was to carry on to the next generation, the Japanese tradition of continuing to use old and new together.
