ROHM Building in Front of Kyoto Station
ROHM Building in Front of Kyoto Station This project called for the renovation of this office building in front of the JR Kyoto Station, which had been up for 33 years. Technology giving consideration to the environment was implemented, together with earthquake resistance strengthening and a high level of design, aiming at a new, fascinating reproduction as a “green building.” The exterior uses a double-skin curtain wall façade, which reduces the environmental load while expressing the corporate image, as a cutting-edge semiconductor corporation. LED lighting manufactured by ROHM is used throughout the building. Now by using natural energy, including solar energy panels on the roof and the reuse of rainwater, annual C02 emissions have been reduced by 350 tons compared to before this refurbishment work.

Johnan Building
Johnan Building This work called for the construction of a building in Kanda, Tokyo, to hold the Johnan Head Office, as well as tenants. During the Edo Period at the time of the construction of Edo Castle, the neighboring Kamakura Bridge marks the river bank where stone materials were carried from. Therefore, the contrast between the jet-black and pure white base tones of Edo Castle has been used as the theme for this building, calling for a dignified and fine-featured presence, carefully using the textures of the materials. Even though the regular and flexible floor planning is small in scale, the design is highly efficient and able to meet various needs. With importance placed on the interface with the environment, natural light and wind are actively drawn inside the entire building. Various views of Tokyo can be seen from the rooftop, which has been greened, and has been opened up for use as amenity space.

Seibo Hospital Shrine
Seibo Hospital Shrine This project called for the reconstruction of the shrine and monastery, which had been up for 50 years, into a shrine and health check center. With the existing hospital on the eastern side of the site, and a residential area at the bottom of a cliff on the western side, it was decided to use a high penthouse shape on the western side and reuse the existing stained-glass windows for an opening to let the late afternoon sun shine in, and thereby reproducing the golden-colored air of the old shrine. By using the newly-developed bent-up roof and bent-up walls called for in this design, a symbolic exterior appearance has been realized with a large space inside without columns or beams. With the interior, the bent-up roof shape is directly manifested, and the light and shadows create an imposing space for prayer. The structural voids inside the bent-up walls are being used as air-conditioning ducts, exhausting the hot air in the upper parts in summer, and reusing that heat in winter. Slit-shaped air-conditioning outlets have been installed in the benches above the floor air-conditioning outlets, enabling air conditioning focused on the area around the person. The air-conditioning system integrates the architecture, the structure, the equipment and even the seats.

New Technica Fukui Building
New Technica Fukui Building This new building, which consolidates three business places that were located in Fukui prefecture, has been constructed in commemoration of the 40th year since the foundation of Technica Fukui. With the concept of “a research facility in the countryside,” the exterior appearance has a fine-featured design to harmonize with the surrounding rural landscape, using decorative exposed concrete finish. To reduce the environmental load, the building has been designed as a “closed box,” with the main entrance located on the western side. As you walk in, a central courtyard with a flower bowl spreads out. The wall facing the flower bowl is composed totally of glass, drawing in light from the outside, and reflecting the mountains and sky on the flower bowl. In order to greatly strengthen the development infrastructure, the new facility includes a 10m radio anechoic chamber and an anechoic chamber.

Osaki Drapery Shop
Osaki Drapery Shop This project called for the demolition of the old dilapidated shop, and the construction of a new shop, along with the generational change of ownership, the conversion to a stock company, and the renewal of the brand image. The building has been constructed with a drapery shop on the first floor, a pawnshop and offices on the second floor, and free space which can be used for multipurposes, such as a gallery on the third floor. With the design motif of glass blocks, the exterior façade has been designed to match the house that was completed four years ago. Traditional designs have been used in the show window, such as the patterns of the namako (sea cucumber) walls of the earthen storehouse on the site, presenting the drapery shop with the feeling of high quality, as well as liveliness and enjoyment, with the aim of contributing to the rejuvenation of this local shopping area.

Hakodate Magistrate’s Office
Hakodate Magistrate’s Office The Hakodate Magistrate’s Office has been restored as part of an historic site improvement project being carried out by Hakodate City to define the historical role of Goryokaku (the star-shaped fort in this city). This government office was responsible for the administration and defense of Ezo, from the end of the Edo Period to the beginning of the Meiji Period. The design is based on the remaining ruins, drawings, old photos and documents, and where possible, the same materials and original construction methods have been used. The building has been constructed in the center of Goryokaku. It took four years for craftsmen with outstanding traditional skills, including shrine carpenters, to complete this project, which includes ancient Japanese earthen walls and plaster, persimmon tannin-coated wooden parts, roofing with Echizen clay roof tiles and shingles, and Bingo-omote hon-tatami and jupenbari fusuma (the highest-class brand of tatami and sliding doors).
