Wakakusa-cho Area Class 1 Urban Redevelopment Project
Otsuka Shokai Yokohama Building This was the redevelopment project of this area, which is the gateway to Hiroshima, having good access to the airport and Hiroshima station. In order to realize the effective use and activation of this site, which was formerly city-operated apartment buildings, a redevelopment project competition was held. The northern block and southern block, which are separated by a road, have been joined using a free passageway. The “Active Intercity Hiroshima” building, with a hotel and offices, has been constructed on the southern block, which directly connects with the station, and “The Hiroshima Tower” and the “Grand Arc Terrace” residential apartment buildings have been constructed on the northern block. This project has given both a sense of connectivity between the two urban areas that were separated, as well as the feeling of attracting people. It is anticipated that the deck connecting the station will mark the starting point for future city growth.

Yagoto Holy Spirit Monastery Arnold Building
Tokuyukai Sakamoto Hospital The project called for the reconstruction of this monastery. The form and sound of the old Arnold Building bell tower have been loved by the city residents as a local symbol since the monastery was established over 50 years ago. By rebuilding the tower in the same position and at the same height, the plan was to preserve as much as possible the original visual and acoustic environment. With a roof and a soft exterior appearance, the new bell tower continues the history of the monastery. While preserving the existing green area of the site, a new cityscape has been created, with new, rich greening and local environment preservation.

Hirosaki Stroke Center
Jodo Shu Head Temple Chion-in Wajun-Kaikan and Approach This additional construction work was for the first rehabilitation center in Aomori Prefecture specializing in strokes. The hospital now has 248 beds, including the existing beds. The new building is connected to the existing building by two connecting corridors, with a logical plan for nursing and treatment, separating the people moving around for treatment, and the people going back to their rooms. With brick-style tiling and exposed reinforced concrete, the aim with the exterior was to create a warm appearance in this extremely cold and snowy region. The deeply sculptured façade lets the sun in even during winter months when the morning sun is low in the sky, and keeps out the strong sun during summer. High side lights installed at various locations in the interior are designed to provide a gentle rehabilitation environment, letting in natural wind and light.
