Takenaka Awarded Contract for Construction
of New Bacolod Airport (Philippines), Full-scale Construction

In May a joint venture between Takenaka Corporation (Head office:
Osaka, President: Toichi Takenaka) and Itochu Corporation (Head
office: Tokyo, President Eizo Kobayashi) was awarded a contract
for the construction of the New Bacolod Airport Passenger Terminal
and runway to be constructed in Silay City, Province of Negros
Occidental (Negros Island) of the Philippines at open tender.
Construction work on the project started in August.
The contract is worth approximately 8.2 billion yen, and work
is scheduled to take place from August 2004 to January 2007.

Overview |
New Bacolod Airport is positioned as the first phase of development
of major domestic airports planned by the Philippine government.
The new airport is to be constructed in Silay City, some 24km
north of the existing Bacolod Airport, located in Bacolod City
on Negros Island. Basically it is an airport for domestic flights,
and in a bid to trigger business and tourism for the central
Philippines area (the area including Negros Island, where the
new airport is to be located, and Cebu Island, a famous tourist
destination), it will have a 2000-meter runway and design specifications
on a par with an international airport, and which comply with
international standards.
The owner of the new airport will be the Government of the Philippines,
Department of Transportation and Communications - Air Transportation
Office (DOTC).
Design and supervision will be carried out by Pacific Consultants
International (PCI). Detailed design of some of the air traffic
control, lighting, meteorological and aviation fuel facilities
will be handled by the Takenaka-Itochu joint venture.
The Philippine government will obtain a loan from the Japan
Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for the construction
of the airport.
