United Arab Emirates
In December last year, as a result of a competifive tender
for Finishes and MEP Works in Terminal 3, Concourse 2, and Car
Park construction work in the large-scale expansion project
at Dubai International Airport, Takenaka Corporation (Head Office:
Osaka; President: Toichi Takenaka) has won the business in a
joint venture with two other companies, Al-Habtoor Engineering
Enterprise Co. (L.L.C.) (Head Office: Dubai Municipality, United
Arab Emirates; President: Riad T Sadik) and Murray & Roberts
Contractors (Middle East) L.L.C. (Head Office: Dubai Municipality,
United Arab Emirates; General Manage: Nigel Harvey), the Dubai

is a member of the joint venture.)
The total project budget for the expansion plans is around 400
billion yen, the amount of the contract received by the joint
venture is around 102 billion yen, the contract work period
is from December 19, 2004 to April 18, 2007, and work on the

Background
and outline of the project |
As the entrance to Dubai, the city which continues to show
remarkable development, and which is the economic and trade
center of the United Arab Emirates, as well as a resort, Dubai
International Airport is an important international hub airport.
The 22 million passengers recorded in the last year keeps on
growing steadily, and because the handling capacity of the airport
was reaching its limit, plans called for the expansion of the
existing airport facilities in order to be able to handle 60
million passengers, as well as a terminal building and concourse
for the local airline, Emirates Airline.
The design was undertaken by a joint team consisting of the
French company Aeroport de Paris International, which undertook
the design for the Abu Dhabi International Airport that was
constructed by Takenaka in 1980, and Dar Al-Handasah Consultants,
the large UK engineering company that has a lot of experience
in the Middle East.
With a rare and novel design seeking to rationalize the airport
facility functions, the new expansion plans call for the Terminal
building and Car Park structure to be constructed underground,
and the Concourse to be built on top. The total floor area of
the Terminal, Concourse and Car Park is a huge scale of around
1.5 million square meters, making this airport expansion work
project the most massive of its kind in the world.
The work for which the joint venture has received an order in
this new Terminal 3, Concourse 2 and Car Park building project
is as follows.
1. Finishing work (including 250 hotel rooms in the concourse)
and ordinary mechanical and electrical work
2. Special airport system equipment work
3. Total coordination business for the work under direct management
by the other contractors including the framework, the exterior
finishing, the baggage conveyor system, the automated passenger
transportation system, and the sky train work (process management,
safety management, arrangements for the temporary facilities
and main work)
