January 15, 2010
Takenaka Corporation
Takenaka Corporation (President: Toichi Takenaka) recently participated in the "2009 E-Defense Blind Analysis Contest" (sponsored by independent administrative institution, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention) along with teams from seven other countries including America and Taiwan, winning awards in four categories. These awards included winning the "3D Analysis, Steel damper," and "2D Analysis, Steel damper" categories. Takenaka places safety and reassurance first and most important in structural design, and believes the high level of the company's analysis technology has been verified through the results of this contest. The company plans to provide even more precise structural designs in the future.
[Contest implementation procedure]
The sponsor prepared a full-scale five-story steel building to which the dampers were installed. Simulations were then carried out to measure displacement and acceleration at various points of the building during earthquake shaking. The building was then shaken using the world's largest three-dimensional shaking table owned by the sponsor. The analysis results and test results were compared. The team with the most accurate predictions won.
[The significance of blind analysis]
It is comparatively easy to carry out simulations when the testing results are known, and highly accurate simulations are possible. However, there is a need to understand beforehand how buildings will shake to prepare for large earthquakes. Blind analysis simulations are carried out without knowing the test results, and therefore verify the actual state of analysis technology.
■Outline of the contest

The independent administrative institution, the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, conducts blind analysis contests to test steel buildings and bridges using its E-Defense shaking table. Eight countries participated in this contest. It was the second contest to test steel buildings, and was conducted using a full-scale five-story steel building to which dampers were installed. The results were announced on December 7, 2009. Takenaka won the top prize in the 2D building analysis researcher's category in the first contest, which was held in 2007, involving the collapse testing of a full-scale four-story steel building.
