HYOGO 2006

This building has been constructed in Tarumi-ku, Kobe, for KATSUMI JYUTAKU, a single-standing housing sales company with the head office in Nishi Akashi, as the sales center for the company as activities spread east of Nishi Akashi. In recent years, the mountain side of the surrounding area has been developed as bedroom suburbs. The site of this building is located along the prefectural road which joins the mountain-side residential areas and the coastal area. With a curved shape, it is 70 meters long and 15 meters wide. To attract the attention and stimulate the interest of the residents in the surrounding areas, the building has been designed to transmit the content of the activities being carried out inside the building to the outside, thereby increasing opportunities for people to visit. By installing two-layer atriums in a step-like configuration, not only do these act as spaces for joining the upper and lower levels, but they have also been designed to be spaces where people can actually feel the connections with their lines of sight. The flat slab flooring and the earthquake-resistant walls used with solid steel columns, together with the curtain walls, all come together to contribute to a feeling of unity, and improve the transparency of this glass box building.

The building fits the natural curve of the river.

Light, airy entrance with glass walls

View of the upper floor from the atrium By installing all the equipment and machinery apart from the lighting inside the core, the air-conditioning equipment normally found on ceilings has been done away with, realizing an internal space with thin floors. Centering on indirect lighting, at night the building transmits light, also acting as an advertising medium. With regard to consideration for the environment, Low-E glass has been used, and using the atrium space, a night purge system is being used. The core has been located on the western side; a simple double skin has been realized with the internal exhaust installed between aluminum spandrel and ALC. The building also has internal greening. Through these various methods, and by integrating various equipment, a transparent glass box has been realized, which gives consideration to the environment and stimulates the interest of the residents in the local community.
