From the Taisho period (1912-1926) through the early postwar period, Asakusa-Roku was the most prominent entertainment district in Japan. Its decline has been a topic of discussion for many years, but recently the momentum for revitalization has been increasing gradually as a result of inbound demand and the formulation of district plans in Taito Ward. The location on the corner of two streets with very different characteristics — an entertainment district and the approach to a Shinto shrine — led to a plan that is designed to produce vibrancy that connects the interior with the exterior, in which a low-rise commercial facility is the largest volume on the site and open spaces and a side street-like entrance are incorporated. The high-rise hotel is triangular in shape, with sides that go along the two streets (the entertainment district and the approach to the shrine). This enables a rooftop garden to be placed on the south side, creating vertical continuity between the greenery and the expanse of the block. The exterior for the low-rise section is art deco stone inlay as required by the district plan, while the high-rise section uses Edo period folding screens as a grid motif to maintain a memory of place and create a new landmark for the area.
