The name comes from the Japanese phrase “ni fureru” which means “to touch,” and it signifies not merely the encounter with living things but also the touching of visitors’ sensibilities. The objective was to create an exhibition space that would enable visitors to the facility to encounter the mysteries and secrets of living things. The exterior design consists of a form of flowing lines meant to evoke aquatic organisms, with numerous apertures designed to resemble bubbles. The porous outer wall bathes the exhibition space in soft natural lighting, while at the same time reducing the sunlight load, securing illumination and providing natural ventilation.
