Hideyo Noguchi Memorial MuseumOverall reconfiguration while preserving the existing sections既存部分を活かして全体を再構成するOwner: The Hideyo Noguchi Memorial FoundationLocation: Inawashiro-cho, yama-gun, Fukushima Main Use: MuseumDesign and construction work: Takenaka Corporation·Architects: Kazuhisa Katsura, Tatsuya Kinoshita, and Katsunori Abe·Structual: Yuji Takahashi·M&E: Yasuharu Okawa·Site manager: Yoshihito MinegishiSite area: 1,985.00m2Building area: 1,188.91m2Total floor area: 1,543.24m2Construction: Reinforced concrete, SteelNumber of stories: 2 floors above groundConstruction term: October 2013 to March 2015建築主:公益財団法人 野口英世記念会所在地:福島県耶麻郡猪苗代町主要用途:博物館設計施工:竹中工務店・設計:葛和久・木下辰也・阿部克紀・構造:高橋雄治・設備:大川康晴・作業所長:嶺岸美仁敷地面積:1,985.00㎡建築面積:1,188.91㎡延床面積:1,543.24㎡構造:RC・S造階数:地上2階工期:2013.10~2015.3The Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Museum opened in 1939 and has provided a long life of service to appreciative patrons since that time. Due to the progressive deterioration of the facility and exhibits, it was decided to conduct a complete renovation while keeping the facility open for use. The upper roof, provided to enclose the house where Noguchi was born, the museum’s prized exhibit, and to protect the facility from heavy snowfall, was preserved, The existing building on the east side was seismically retrofitted and the interior and exterior were repaired. In order to ensure an integrated appearance after the addition and renovation work, the building height was made approximately equal to that of the preserved building. The exterior materials were refurbished using wood-like eaves soffits and steel plates and plaster for the outer walls that are the color of roof tiles, in order to ensure continuity with the region and the Noguchi birth house. Only the tower section bearing the name of the building was projected to contrast with the rest of the structure and serve as an indicator of the complete renovation. In this way, the full-scale reconfiguration of the facility while preserving the existing sections was done in a way that allowed the building itself to symbolize the continuation and expansion of its functions as a memorial hall.
