The rare book reading room that constitutes the core facility was made to resemble a stage on which people can encounter works such as William Shakespeare’s First Folio, and the library as a whole was designed to resemble a theater environment. Glass walls are placed in the center of the floor on which the rare books room and rare books reading room are enclosed by galleries, enabling the students to more closely feel the presence of rare books and the researchers who visit the library from institutions at home and abroad, in the hope that the venue itself will actively encourage them to gain experience. The objective was to create a facility whose functions are not limited to those of a reference library but in which people, objects and concepts can encounter one another in diverse ways — an information center that can communicate the presence of the knowledge, culture and rare works that have been accumulated by the university.
