The exterior is “closed” to the view from neighboring residences in order to ensure the privacy needed for a women’s dormitory. In contrast, the facade is “open” in the north and south directions which offer views and abundant natural beauty. The shadows created by the forest of reinforced concrete walls, combined with the light seeping out through the gaps in the walls, enfold the arriving female students in a feminine gentleness like that of a juni-hitoe, a 12-layered ceremonial kimono.
