The exterior gives the hospital an open feel, with deeply-inset window openings to block the summer sun. The interior has streamlined paths of movement and a comfortable environment provided by incorporating natural light and breezes. The hospital rooms and residences have no protruding columns, making furniture placement easy. In terms of safety, seismically isolated construction and measures to prevent the disruption of infrastructure services have been employed to protect patients, residents and staff from earthquakes and tsunamis, and to enable the hospital to remain in operation and to serve as a local evacuation center.
