The Design Division of Takenaka Corporation has worked on many residences and was originally established by architect Koji Fujii who is famous for designing Chochikukyo, the original environmentally conscious residence in Japan. For this book, we visited and photographed 27 residences constructed in various parts of Japan from 1973 through 2015, to see how they are being lived in today and to verify the aim of the “residential architectural environments” created by Takenaka Corporation during this period. Architecture is a mirror of the times, and residences stay alive by continuing to meet the needs of each age. The members of the Planning and Editing Working Group debated and reexamined the hopes of our predecessors in the Design Division of Takenaka Corporation who had a deep connection to these residences. We hope that this book of residences that have lived on for many years will bring about an in-depth consideration of “residential architectural environments” on the part of both architectural professionals and members of the general public.
