This area was formerly the largest timber storage area in Tokyo, so it was a requirement that a symbolic timber school be created using timber processed locally. Fire resistant laminated timber was adopted in order to construct a large scale timber structure school in the city center. Timber structure and timber materials were positively utilized in the normal classrooms and the interaction spaces of the common areas, which are the focus of the school life of the children, so that they can feel the warmth of the timber while learning. A “timber corridor” with a succession of timber columns is provided in the long school building. This is an axis of interaction for the children, into which educational materials are incorporated by burning various words and signs onto larch boards covering the open space. The aim was to create an environment for interaction among the children and the teachers and to stimulate interest in learning by experiencing the features and charm of timber.
