With a focus on the rich natural environment, rows of Japanese Zelkova trees were planted along the axis of the research base, with the concept of creating a new research laboratory linked to nature. The research function was arranged on one side of the row of Zelkova trees and the welfare function on the other side, with a plaza in between as a place for people to come and go and to have encounters. A large canopy was placed to cover the plaza, making it into a semi-exterior space, thereby rendering ambiguous the boundaries between natural and man-made, exterior and interior, and realizing a research laboratory that embraces nature.
