Iino Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (President: Tomoyuki Sekine), Takenaka Corporation (President: Toichi Takenaka) and Toshiba Lighting & Technology Corporation (President: Masami Fukuda) are to install 14,500 LED base lighting units (1) in the tenant office floors (from the seventh to the 27th floor) of the “Iino Building” (in Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). The area covered by these units will reach around 50,000 square meters, making it the largest area in Japan for these types of units. With the implementation of these LED base lighting units and lighting control system, the lighting energy consumption of the “Iino Building” can be reduced by around 50 percent, compared to standard office space (2).
Takenaka was responsible for the design and construction of the “Iino Building” at the request of the client, Iino Kaiun Kaisha. The LED base lighting units used in the project were developed by Toshiba Lighting & Technology. (The company to supply the lighting units was selected after Iino Kaiun Kaisha and Takenaka called for tenders for this project from a few large Japanese lighting companies, with the development of the units as one of the prerequisites.)

LED base lighting units(*1)
The core lighting fixtures using highly-efficient LED modules
Standard office space(*2)
Office space with appropriate illumination using ordinary base lighting (FHP45 x 2) + illumination control using daylight

As the “Environmentally-Friendly Iino Building Work,” this project was approved as work which could be subsidized by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

About the LED base lighting used in this project

LED (used in this project) Fluorescent tubes (conventional method)
Average desktop illumination (lx) 700 700
Power consumption(w/m2) 12 18
Life(hours) 40,000 12,000
Energy cost(3) 53% (compared to Fluorescent tubes) 100%
Energy cost(*3)
Compared to standard office space(2)in the case of appropriate illumination using ordinary base lighting + illumination control using daylight + sensors to detect the presence of people in the space. (In the case of using the LED base lighting unit alone, the energy cost comparison is 66 percent.)
