(Top left and right photos: Matsuyama-honzo)Quality Medicinal Plants Grown in NaraMedicinal plant materials harvested in Nara pre-fecture have a reputation for efficacy, particularly shakuyaku (Peony Root), botan (Moutan Bark) and toki (Japanese Angelica Root). These ingredients are nely chopped or ground into powder to make kampo medicine. In 1947, the Nara government created a division to support its kampo industry, prompting the establishment of many pharmaceutical companies.Shakuyaku (Paeonia lactiflora; far left) originated in East Asia, and takes four to five years to harvest. Its dried root (Peony Root) is used to treat female ailments. Botan (Paeo-nia suffruticosa; near left) was introduced from China in the eighth century. The bark of a five-year old plant is dried (Moutan Bark) and also used for female aliments.Toki (Angelica acutiloba) grown in Nara prefecture originated in Japan. It takes two years to grow; its roots are dried natu-rally in cold air then softened in hot water (Japanese Angelica Root). After kneading by hand to increase sugar content, they are formed into a horse tail-like shape and dried for use in treating female ail-ments.
