app. Autumn 2018 11Jio (r.) (Matsuyama-honzo)Obaku (l.) (Matsuyama-honzo)Jio (Rehmannia glutinosa var. purpurea) was introduced from China and historically is difficult to grow. In Japan, the plant is currently grown only in Nara and Nagano prefectures; its roots (Rehm-annia Root) are used to lower fever and moisturize skin.Obaku (Phellodendron Bark) is peeled bark of the kihada tree (Phellodendron amurense, P. chi-nense). It is harvested after the summer rainy season. The inner bark is bright yellow when peeled, but soon turns brown. The dried bark is used as digestive medicine.
