There are white berry and red berry types, and both are used for cough medicine; its leaves have an antiseptic effect and are used to decorate food dishes.Plants gradually adapt to the terroir in which they are grown. Medicinal plants originally introduced from China have changed progressively over the years to adapt to the Japanese environment. There are many plants with the same name grown in Japan, Korea and China, yet their characteristics and medicinal efcacy may differ. The Matsuyama-honzo offers in-sight into how the plants looked in the past.The young green berries of the sansho tree (Zanthoxylum piperitum) are ground for use as a cooking spice, but when the berries are matured, the pericarps (Japanese Zanthoxy-lum Peel) are used as a kampo stomach medicine. Trees are proliferated through grafting.
