app. Autumn 2018 13Bofu (Matsuyama-honzo)Baimo (Matsuyama-honzo)Bofu (Saposhnikovia divaricata) was introduced to Japan dur-ing the early eighteenth cen-tury from China. The root and rhizome (Saposhnikovia Root and Rhizome) are used as a cold medicine. First-genera-tion Tosuke Morino received the seed from the Shogunate and grew it on his farm.The original species of baimo (Fritillaria verticillata var. thun-bergii) was introduced from China. Third-generation To-suke Morino cultivated baimo from seed gifted by the Sho-gunate. The bulb (Fritillaria Bulb) is used as cough medi-cine and was a top seller until the 1980s.
