Damaged operating rooms and equipment makes uninterrupted med-ical treatment difficult, even though the building structure itself may be undamaged. Preventing damage to surgical areas, which specifically re-quire a sterile, airtight environment, is crucial.Takenaka Corporation has developed a Seismic Isolation System for Operating Areas (patent pend-ing) which suspends operating rooms and surgical equipment space by seismic isolation devices em-bedded in the ceiling. Integrating seismic isolation systems in hospital buildings has been difficult in general because of high costs and complicated construction work. The seismic isolation floor sys-tem also presents problems, as the protected area is limited and restricts placement of equipment; furthermore, it is difficult to ensure the airtight-ness of the room. Take naka’s new Seismic Isola-tion System for Operating Areas enables contin-ued surgery and medical treatment immediately following an earthquake, as it seismically isolates floor, walls and ceiling in an integrated manner. It can be easily installed as a renovation with short-er construction times, and is economical. Takena-ka aims to support medical continuity by promot-ing this Seismic Isolation System.
