In recent years, space development has accelerated significantly around the world. Human space exploration, in particular, is entering a new phase, with efforts underway to send humans back to the Moon for the first time since the Apollo era of the 1960s and 1970s. Looking further ahead, discussions are already taking place about a future in which dozens of people could live and work on the Moon.
As a company specializing in architectural design and construction, Takenaka Corporation aims to enhance quality of life in space, or “Space QOL (Quality of Life)” so that people can live more comfortably even in the harsh conditions of space. To achieve this goal, we plan and design space architecture, living environments, and communities, while conducting the research and development needed to bring these concepts to life.
In the near future, space travel will no longer be limited to highly trained astronauts on exploration missions. Commercial space professionals and members of the public will travel to space for an increasingly diverse range of purposes.
In space, ensuring human safety and survival is the highest priority. Because transporting materials and equipment into space is extremely costly, space stations to date have been designed primarily for functionality rather than comfort. Their living environments have largely relied on the exceptional physical and mental resilience of highly trained astronauts.
For more people to live on the Moon or Mars for extended periods, living environments must not only ensure safety and functionality, but also provide the comfort needed to support a high quality of life.
Takenaka Corporation defines quality of life in zero-gravity, low-gravity, and confined environments as “Space QOL.” We are conducting research into comfort and physical and mental well-being in space and applying our findings to the design of living environments that enable people to live safely, functionally, and comfortably beyond Earth.

Creating more comfortable space architecture requires more than technological development alone. Just as with architecture on Earth, we believe that an integrated approach encompassing planning, research and development, design, and construction is essential.
To advance this approach, Takenaka Corporation established the Space Architecture Task Force, or TSX (Takenaka Space eXploration). Bringing together designers, researchers, and other professionals from across departments and locations, TSX works in collaboration with a wide range of academic institutions and companies.

From early-stage base camps for initial lunar exploration to large-scale communal spaces supporting a growing community, we plan diverse space architectures centered on the comfort and well-being of its inhabitants.
To realize a permanent presence of dozens of people in the 2040s and more advanced, diverse lunar architectures thereafter, we are developing phased concepts and plans, including robotic exploration and small-crew, short-duration habitats. Furthermore, the development of construction technologies required for lunar habitation will proceed in close coordination with terrestrial architectural technology development.
